As printed in The Bookseller; a letter by local author Simon Whaley
" Further to M C Newberry's letter about booksellers being indifferent to local authors, my advice is to work with the ones that are helpful and keep plugging away at the ones that aren't. In the past few days I've liaised with two of my local booksellers to great effect.
My local independent bookseller (Burway Books) helped me out when I was invited to sign copies of my book "Fundraising for a Community Project" for a large grant funding fair in Hereford. A few days later I was in WHSmith's Wellington (Shropshire) with 11 other authors for a local author event, enabling me to launch my latest book, "The Little Book of Alternative Garden Wisdom". The day went well for all authors concerned and more events like this are planned.
If M C Newberry only had one response from a dozen bookshops, my advice is to grab that one bookshop and start a good, productive relationship with them. An author does well if their books sell, and a bookseller does well if they sell books. It's called succeeding in business. Once you have a great relationship, both parties benefit. Booksellers who are not interested are losing out. But before you write off those other 11 booksellers, make one more attempt to interest them in what you have to offer. Relationships are hard work, and it's worth remembering that you're not the only author out there trying to have a relationship with that particular bookseller."
Good luck.
