Gareth Owen Event at the Longmynd Hotel, 29th July 2007
Local poet and author Gareth Owen very kindly stepped into the breach at our Arts Festival event when Rosie Boycott cancelled her appearance at the last minute.
And we were not disappointed as, after explaining away his recently acquired black eye, he proceeded to give a very amusing and perceptive performance to the assembled audience of around 60 guests.
Originally from Lancashire, he talked about his childhood and his experience as a teacher, which had provided much of the witty inspiration for his books. He read excerpts to us in his glorious native twang, transforming himself from petulant schoolchild to world-weary teacher in various amusing renditions of his poetry. “Gathering in the Day” provided a brief diversion from the humour and was greeted with nostalgic sighs by many in the room.
Gareth answered questions and signed copies of his books before leaving us smiling contentedly after a most enjoyable afternoon.
