‘Notes from a Small Island’ by Bill Bryson
Though born in America, Bryson has spent much of his life in England and in this highly amusing book he takes a look at us Brits the way perhaps only an outsider can as he travels around the UK (Ludlow features briefly). His observations of us as a nation may be tongue-in-cheek, yet they are uncannily accurate and will have you laughing out loud. He muses at strange place names and customs, quirky sayings and mannerisms, and much, much more. My ribs ached from laughing so much by the time I had finished it: the perfect antidote to help lift your spirits after the cold winter we have suffered this year.
And if you like this book, try ‘McCarthy’s Bar’ by the late Pete McCarthy in which the author travels around Ireland on a mission to visit every bar that bears his surname (hence the title!). Side-splittingly funny.
