One summer following the Second World War, Robert Appleyard sets out on foot from a Co Durham pit village across the North East countryside to Robin Hood’s Bay. Robert is sixteen and the son of a miner. He stumbles across Dulcie an eccentric other worldly woman on his odyssey, she saves him from starvation…..
I was drawn to reading this novel because I know the area fairly well, my father was a miner’s son from Willington a pit village in Co Durham.
The Offing is one of my favourite reads this year. Rosalind
