My first day as a bookshop owner in September 1974
Cash box was ready with £20 float and there were a few books of my choosing on the metal ‘Bookwise’ shelves
Looking out of the front window there was a crumpled heap of clothes by the bus stop opposite – I ran across to find an elderly woman blue and her eyes were glazed over. The next few minutes were a blur, the local doctor rushed to the scene and pronounced the woman dead.
A little shocked I carried on in my new bookshop, there were a few sales.
