On 20th September 1974 Ros Ephraim founded Burway Books in Church Stretton, in the little shop at No10 Beaumont Road, which the laundrette had recently vacated (booksellers Heather and Natasha were not yet born, whilst Hilary sat her ‘O’ Levels that year!). 40 years later, and a few doors along at No 18 Beaumont Road, Burway Books is still going strong, with many loyal customers who have supported us since opening, along with numerous visitors to the town.
We celebrated our 40th birthday with delicious cakes made by Hilary (lemon cake) Mr Bun’s cherry cup cakes and Van Doesburg’s tiramisu gateau. To quote Jo Brand: “Birthdays are nature’s way of telling you to eat more cake”.
We were joined by Deborah Moggach, bestselling author of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Heartbreak Hotel and Tulip Fever. We have a good selection of Deborah’s books, and we have a few signed copies left. Thank you Deborah and all authors and customers who attended for making the occasion a joyous one.
